Google just made social media measurable, and almost nobody has noticed

The short version

  • Google Search Console now shows real search data for your social posts (Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube) for the first time ever. It’s rolling out over the next few weeks.
  • That’s a goldmine. Search traffic is the highest-intent traffic there is, and almost nobody optimises their social posts for it, so there’s next to no competition.
  • The bigger prize: showing up in search is the doorway to getting named in AI answers when a customer asks what to buy or who to hire.
  • Setup takes two minutes. You add your social accounts as properties in Search Console. If your website isn’t connected yet, do that first, it’s the foundation for all of it.
  • The one move that matters: find the terms you already get impressions for, and put that exact phrase at the front of your next post’s title or caption.

If you do anything on social media, Google has just dropped what I think is the most important announcement of the year, and it slipped out with barely a ripple.

For the first time ever, you can see real data on how your social media posts perform in Google Search. Not likes, not reach on the platform itself, actual search data. What people typed into Google before your post showed up. Where your post ranked. How many people clicked through.

Google is calling it platform properties, and it lives inside Google Search Console. It’s rolling out gradually over the next few weeks, so you may or may not see it in your account yet, but it’s coming.

Search Console has always been the single best data source in SEO, bar none. It’s the one place Google tells you, in its own words, what people searched to find you. Until now that only covered your website. We’re finally getting it for social too: Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube.

First, what Search Console actually is (and why every website needs it)

If you’ve not come across Search Console before, here’s the two-minute version, because honestly every business with a website should have it open.

Search Console is a free tool from Google. You connect your website to it once, and from then on Google tells you, in its own words, how you’re doing in search: which searches you turned up for, where you ranked, how many people clicked, and anything that’s broken or quietly stopping your pages being found.

Nothing else gives you that. Your analytics tell you what people did once they were on your site. Search Console tells you how they found you in the first place, and which nearly-found-you searches you’re missing.

That last bit is the gold. It’s the one place Google shows you the actual phrases real people typed to reach you. Not guesses, not a keyword tool’s best estimate, the real ones. Once you can see those, the whole of SEO gets easier, because you’re working off what’s genuinely happening instead of what you hope is happening.

So if your website isn’t connected to it yet, that’s the first job, before any of the social stuff below. It’s free, it takes a few minutes, and it’s the foundation the rest of this sits on.

”But why would I care how my posts do in Google?”

Fair question. Here’s why.

Traffic from search is the highest-value traffic there is. It’s not someone idly scrolling who happened past your post, it’s someone actively searching, right now, for the exact thing you’re talking about. If you’re a brand, that’s often someone typing in the precise product or service you sell. Intent doesn’t get much hotter than that.

Search traffic isn’t someone scrolling past. It’s someone actively searching, right now, for exactly what you do.

And you can almost certainly pull far more of it than you’d think, because you’ve never really been optimising your social posts for search. Here’s the good part: neither have your competitors. Which means there’s next to no competition for it.

We’ve been optimising our own social posts and our clients’ for search for a while now, and we regularly pull a big chunk of traffic from Google, even on brand-new channels with no following yet.

The catch? Up to now we’ve been doing it completely blind. Guessing at the terms, with no feedback loop. That’s what just changed.

The part I’m actually excited about

Getting more search traffic is good. But it’s not the main event.

The main event is this: social posts can influence what AI recommends. When someone asks an AI which brand to use, it’s pulling from what it can find across the web, and your social content is part of that picture. But there’s a gatekeeper. Before a post can influence an AI answer, it first has to show up reliably in a search engine. That’s the doorway.

So any data that helps you show up more reliably in search also helps you show up more reliably in AI answers. And that’s the real prize: getting the AI to name your brand instead of your competitor’s when a customer asks who to hire or what to buy. This new Search Console data is the first proper feedback loop we’ve ever had for that.

How to set it up

It takes two minutes.

Go to Google Search Console and, in the property selector at the top left, choose Add property. Alongside your website, you’ll now be able to add your Instagram, X, TikTok and YouTube accounts, then follow the prompts to verify each one. (X sometimes shows up without any verification step at all.) If you’ve never connected your website domain, do that first, it’s the foundation for everything else.

Once you’re in, you’ll see which of your posts are showing up in search. But the gold is the layer beneath that: the exact terms people typed before your post appeared, and for each one, your impressions and your clicks.

Read the impressions, not just the clicks

Clicks are what we ultimately care about. But impressions are where the information is.

An impression just means you showed up in the results for that term, whether or not anyone clicked. And that’s the signal that matters, because an impression means Google already trusts your channel enough to rank you for that search. Even if you’re ranking too low to pull real clicks yet, you’re on the board for that term.

An impression means Google already trusts your channel enough to rank you. You’re on the board.

So here’s the move. Look for the terms where you’re getting lots of impressions but few clicks. That combination is telling you something specific: you’re close. You’re ranking, just not high enough, and if you nudged your ranking up a little, those impressions would turn into a flood of clicks. Those terms are your biggest, easiest opportunities. Start there.

How to actually optimise a social post for a term

This is the bit people expect to be complicated. It isn’t.

You’ve found a term Google already trusts your channel for. You can either optimise the existing post that’s earning those impressions, or write a fresh one aimed squarely at that term. Either way, the move is the same: put that exact term at the front of your title, caption or tweet.

That’s it. Lead with the phrase people are searching. Google is already telling you it associates your channel with that term, you’re just making the association louder and more obvious. Do that one thing consistently and you’ll be doing social SEO better than 99% of the people out there.

Why this matters now

For years, social and search lived in separate worlds. You posted into the social void and hoped; you did SEO on your website and measured. Google has just knocked the wall down between them, and handed you the measuring tape.

The businesses that pick this up early get a double win: more high-intent traffic from a channel with almost no competition, and a real feedback loop for getting named in AI answers. Both, from the same two-minute setup. Most people won’t touch it for months. That’s exactly why now is the time.
