You might not need a website yet
I build websites for a living, and I’m about to tell you that you might not need one yet. Stick with me, because this is me trying to save you a couple of grand you don’t have to spend today.
Here’s the thing nobody selling websites will say out loud: a website is a tool, not a trophy. If you don’t need the tool yet, buying it just means it sits there gathering dust while you tell yourself you’ve “sorted your online presence.”
When a full website can wait
If you’re rushed off your feet on word of mouth, booked up for weeks, and every job comes from a mate telling a mate, then a big website is not your most urgent problem. It’s a nice-to-have you can grow into.
You’ve got more pressing, cheaper wins first:
- A properly set-up Google Business Profile. Free, and for a lot of local trades it’s where most of your finding happens. Right category, real photos, your services listed, a few reviews. Get that humming before you spend on anything fancy.
- A steady trickle of reviews. The single best bit of marketing a local business can do, and it costs nothing but the asking.
- A simple, tidy presence so that when someone does check you out, you look real and reachable. That can be a one-page site, not a ten-page one.
Do those, and you’ll get further than the fella who spent three grand on a website nobody visits.
The moment you actually do need one
So when does the tool earn its place? When you want more than the people who already know you.
Here’s the sign. You need a proper website when:
- You want to be found by people who’ve never heard of you searching “your trade near me” on Google.
- You want to be chosen over the competition, not just found. When someone’s comparing three of you, the one who looks like they know their stuff wins, and word of mouth alone can’t do that job.
- You want to turn up when someone asks an AI for a recommendation. That reads the open web, and it can’t recommend a business it can’t find.
- You’re ready to grow on purpose, not just take what walks in.
When you’re there, a website stops being a nice-to-have and becomes the thing doing the growing. Not before.
Why I’m telling you this
Because a website you don’t need yet is just money out the door, and I’d rather you spent it when it’ll actually earn. A subscription that isn’t earning its keep is just a direct debit, and I don’t want to be a direct debit.
If you’re not sure which camp you’re in, that’s an easy conversation. Sometimes the honest answer is “get your Google listing sorted and come back to me in six months,” and I’m happy to be the one who says it.
Not sure if it’s your time yet? Book a quick call or email hello@inkon.co.uk, and I’ll tell you straight, even if the answer’s “not yet.” I read every message myself.
